Monark Starstalker Prologue;it is always winter on stormking.a small world of rock and ice,she’s the most remote of the frontier planets.the federal starship ‘’host of the air’’out of istabul,terra,is her only link with the inner planets.carrying tools,drugs and hardware,the ship rarely bears passengers.thus,today is a rare day indeed.his name is Emanuel shaw,3rd vice president,triplanetary metals,inc.he hopes his arrival will be met with pleasure. But he hopes in vain…for,in the abortive war for frontier independence,many sons of stormking died under federal guns.and those who returned,beaten..have no desire for federal handouts..much less federal representative. Well,well. Shaw;Young man—can I help you? Look at that Yeah Another traveler steps from the starliner.he is an entrepreneur..a hunter..some call him jackal..vulture..viper.but,his name is Monark Starstalker. Get em boys Unngh! ==Powers/Abilities==

The robotic falcon, Ulysses, functions as a telepathic nervous system for Monark Starstalker, thus he is immune to weapons such as Vortex Pistols. Ulysses' audio, visual, and thermal senses are linked to Starstalker allowing him to fight blind and to shoot objects which would normally be out of sight; consequently, the falcon is an ideal scout. Ulysses is extremely agile and can dodge bullets, but the consequences have not been revealed if it were damaged or destroyed. Starstalker is also a skilled brawler.

Marvel Premiere #32 came out just before Star Wars came months to a year later on..What initially sold me on this was the art. Just flipping through it at the newsstand I was impressed, and I liked science-fiction stories anyway.

It boggles my mind that this was done in 1976... shame about the shitty printing.What hurts Monark,despite a bit of his recent background,we know nothing his character before he was a rigger.Also Monark Starstalker could use a cool ship like the Millenium Falcon or Starlord sentient ship.

Howard Chaykin never gets credit for this, but I think he is the man that pioneered modern comics-page design. Most of the books we see from the 1970's tend to look a little dated and old-school to modern eyes, with the standard six-panel grids and heavy exposition. But Chaykin's pages here look as fresh as if they'd been published this week. Look at how he's playing with composition and panel design in this recap of Monark's origins. This isn't a superhero story, strictly speaking.Monark really was more closer to a character like Conan the Barbarian or Han Solo or even Clint Eastwood's Man with no name , but it's close enough that I included it on the list. Monark Starstalker is more of a prototype of the hero that Chaykin would go on to perfect in books like Cody Starbuck and American Flagg... a ruthless, cynical loner with a dark sense of humor and a deeply-camouflaged sense of decency. Despite its science fiction trappings, there's a real old-West vibe about this story, with its story of a vicious outlaw's mining-rights scam and the cowardly townspeople that are depending on Monark the bounty hunter to save them.

I'd only seen one other Chaykin piece before this one, "Judgment Day" in Detective #441. But this was miles beyond that. The angular faces and figures, the amazing use of spot blacks... seeing this kind of design work combined with my simultaneous discovery of paperback artists like Robert McGinnis and the stuff Steranko was doing on Weird Heroes crystallized my own approach to drawing. That movie-poster, in-your-face look became what I aspired to do with my own stuff and eventually led to my own career in commercial art. It all started here. These stories are largely forgotten by most fans, but it was the chance of lucking into this kind of oddity that kept me hanging in there with the tryout books like Premiere and Spotlight and First Issue Special. Those are some of my favorite comics and this particular one tops the list. This story has never been reprinted, which is a damn shame because the paper the comic's printed on is so awful. I would love to see this get a nice new edition on paper that doesn't soak up ink like a Kleenex. Maybe someday Marvel will do a trade paperback collection of the stories featuring the also-ran characters like Monark.... after all, in a world where there's an Essential edition starring Brother Voodoo and groovy Diana Prince reprint books are flying off store shelves, anything's possible.

==History==

(Marvel Premiere#32 (fb) ) - Starstalker was a rigger (a pilot, whose nervous system is attached to a starship). During the war for independence between the Federation and Frontier Planets, Starstalker's starship was attacked. As a result, his nervous system, senses, and memory were incinerated. Fortunately, an alien race known as Technos built him an android falcon named Ulysses to remedy his injuries. When the war was aborted 7 years later, Starstalker became an infamous bounty hunter.

(Marvel Premiere#32) - Upon arrival on planet Stormking, Starstalker befriended a woman by the name of Robin Goodfriend whom he stayed with while investigating the whereabouts of Kurt Hammer (a wanted assassin). Starstalker dispensed frontier justice after tracking down Hammer in the harsh Stormking wilderness between the cities New Canaan and Vesalius. He was last seen leaving Stormking on the Federal Starship "Host of the Air", which was headed towards Mega IV.

It is unclear if this Monark Starstalker is the exact same one Marvel Premeire,since world seem to exist in some future time Earth has space travel to colonial worlds,wheres this Monark Starstalker is currently in the modern Marvel Universe.Maybe Marnark Starstalker has travel back in time or another an alternate reality.Until those questions are answered by Marvel anything is a good guess.Monark Starstalker was a character that potential,but Howie Chaykin failed give it to him.Although the story was a space opera Western,it lacked somethings that might have it better.A cool Han Solo type space ship like Millenium Falcon.Other characters that Monark could work with.I'd pick characters similar to the one Batman uses without costumed super stick.Dick Grayson,Barbara Gordon,Tim Drake,and so on,to help his outlaw hunting.The Rigger events shouldn't explored more.and who he was in the past.Ofcourse this means a series and smart creative talent to make it work.

If you're a fan of cosmic comics, you may have picked up your new copy of NOVA and wondered... Who the heck is Monark Starstalker? Where'd he come from?

In 1976 artist and writer Howard Chaykin created Monark Starstalker for a done-in-one story in the Marvel Premiere title. “They were doing a series of one shots, and that's what I did,” Chaykin said. Nearly thirty-five years later, Monark Starstalker appears on the cover and in the pages of NOVA #29. Although not involved in the character's resurrection, Chaykin said he wasn't surprised to see Marvel bring the character back, given the nature of comics and the “recycling” of characters and stories. “Nothing goes unused,” he pointed out. “We live and work in a business in which, dating back to the 1930's, nothing goes to go to waste.”

Marvel Premiere's format, featuring one shot stories and miniseries, allowed the company to work with up-and-coming talent, as Chaykin was at the time. “I didn't have the sensibility and sort of working day to day skills to handle a monthly book with any real commitment,” Chaykin said, looking back. “These days, that's a different story! But in those days I didn't have the energy or the professional skills to do that. I was still learning my craft. The unfortunate nature of my career is that much of my early career was spent in public – people got to see me learn. Marvel Premiere #32

Chaykin's craft is actually on fine display in Marvel Premiere #32. The cover and story feature Monark Starstalker and his golden falcon android “Ulysses,” the cover promising “Savage Science Fantasy!” telling the reader, “The Galaxy is his Hunting Ground... its deadliest inhabitants his PREY!!”

Monark is a blind bounty hunter – the android falcon provides him sight and replaces his nervous system. Chaykin packs a bunch of concepts and ideas into the book, creating a distant, future society that feels lived-in, with a history all its own. It's our universe – Monark arrives on the snowy planet Stormking, “the most remote of the frontier planets,” on the starship “Host of the Air” out of “Istanbul, Terra.”

Humankind has expanded into the stars. There was a recent war for frontier independence, crushed by the “Federals.” Stormking's residents include many who fought and lost in the war. Many died. They don't welcome the arrival of Emmanuel Shaw, 3rd Vice President of Triplanet Metals and a Federal Representative, when he steps off the starship. They have an even harsher greeting for bounty hunter Monark Starstalker, who steps off the ship behind Shaw. Monark Starstalker

Monark fends off their attack and is not effected when Sheriff Hightower of New Canaan shows up and fires his Vortex Pistol, which causes vertigo and blindness. The “wharf rats” slink off after the sheriff's intervention. Shaw, though initially grateful to be rescued, is alarmed when he finds out who Starstalker is. “Wonder who hates you more – Federals or Frontiersmen,” the sheriff wonders rhetorically to Monark – Chaykin skillfully filling in details with his dialogue.

Monark is on Stormking hunting a murderer, former Frontiersmen and rebel Kurt Hammer. He tries to enjoy a hot meal but is attacked in the restaurant. The sheriff kicks him out of town. Luckily, Monark made the acquaintance of a Miss Goodfriend at the restaurant, and she invites him out to her cabin. He reveals to her how his nervous system was burnt out when he was wired into a starship and had to fly through the core of a nova. “Technos” gave him Ulysses, “An artificial nervous system, telepathically linked to me,” he tells her. They hook up romantically in her cabin, where he spends the night. Monark Starstalker

Monark Explains His “Nervous System” to Goodfriend

Miss Goodfriend takes off for New Canaan on horseback the next morning. In town, Representative Shaw is encountering a violent response to his speech. Kurt Hammer grabs Shaw's assistant Miss Siebold, shoots Shaw, kills Sheriff Hightower, and then begins gunning down the crowd! Goodfriend rides back to the cabin and lets Starstalker know what happened. He borrows her horse and rides off at sunset. Chaykin's prose is poetic: “Dusk... and as the ever-continuing snowflakes fall, they catch the last red rays of a dying sun... swirling like scarlet embers in a frigid fire.”

Turns out there's more going on – Kurt Hammer was paid by Triplanet to kill Shaw. Hammer tells an apparently complicit Brigid Sieblod that Shaw was “an incompetent, with too much top security data in his head to simply fire.” Hammer and Triplanet also believe that guilt over Shaw's death will lead the residents of Stormking to beg for the company to come in, so they'll win the planet's mining rights “to boot.”

Siebold and Hammer took off out of town on a sled, riding into the Stormking wilderness. They're waiting for pick-up, but a storm is interfering with their planned rescue. They look for a cave for shelter for the night. Hammer leaves the sled where he can see it – as a trap. Siebold has warned him about Starstalker. Monark Starstalker

Hammer Targets Ulysses

Hammer shoots the horse out from under Monark when he arrives on the scene. Monark dives for cover and returns fire, able to shoot where he can't possibly see, thanks to the android falcon's enhanced senses. Hammer realizes the golden bird is somehow letting Monark see him and starts trying to hit it. His shotgun fire triggers an avalanche, burying Monark!

Hammer keeps firing, trying to hit the now circling falcon. Monark rises up out of the snow and takes down Hammer. Monark doesn't kill Hammer – says it's because he doesn't want to carry Siebold back to New Canaan. He makes them walk back to town with him. It takes them three days to make the trip – but they don't all make it. Monark walks into town carrying Siebold in his arms as the sheriff is buried in the local cemetery and Shaw's coffin is being loaded onto the starship. He tells the townspeople Hammer “died yesterday of pneumonia. He's staked out twenty miles north of here. See that my claim is registered.”

He also asks them to send a rider out to thank Miss Goodfriend for him. He's told the starship can delay takeoff if Monark wants to see her himself and stay in town another night. He declines, tells them to just “do as I say. Knowing you people as she does, she'll understand.”

The end. We never do find out who Monark Starstalker is working for – it doesn't really matter to the story as it's told. Yet there is enough back story provided, in captions and dialogue, to make the universe feel lived-in and real. With its frontier setting, its history with a rebellion against the “Federals” and folks on horseback, it also brought to mind another all too short-lived science fantasy – Joss Whedon's “Firefly”! Could Whedon have been influenced, consciously or unconsciously, by the story of Monark Starstalker?

Evidently current Marvel Cosmic writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning were influenced by Chaykin's story – proof lies on the cover of the new issue of NOVA #29 – the return of Starstalker! How does his creator feel about the return? “I really didn't have (a reaction) one way or the other,” Chaykin said. He's seen the new art for the character, but hasn't read the book. “One of the guys at Marvel sent it to me,” Chaykin said. “It looked pretty.” Chaykin said he didn't have any plans for the character beyond the single story in Marvel Premiere. It will be interesting to see what DnA have in mind for the blind bounty hunter and his golden android falcon as he reappears in the pages of NOVA.

==Updates or another version==

Monark Starstalker – a name heard in most parts of the universe, and a name feared by those with a bounty on their heads. Once he was a rigger, his nervous system hardwired to his ship. On a routine patrol, he was attacked by hostile forces and was forced to flee through the core of a nova. His escape came with a high price. The ship was struck by massive amounts of the star's energy which flowed through the connecting agents at his wrists and spine, frying his nervous system, senses and memory. Another ship would eventually take him on board, but the doctors gave up on restoring him. However, beings he refers to as the Technos – presumably technologically based creatures – repaired him and gave him an artificial nervous system in the form of a cybernetic falcon-drone named Ulysses. Together with his android falcon, Monark Starstalker hunts the universe for some of the vilest individuals alive.

After the Shi'ar and Kree war had resulted in the creation of The Fault, a long lost Nova Corps starship, the Resolute Duty, suddenly reappeared. Upon further investigation of the ship, it was found to hold a Nova Centurion, several droids and one dangerous captive. Zan Philo had been missing for thirty-five years, but still held the Corps values above all, bringing justice to whatever universe he found himself in. Even though he already had a live prisoner in tow, there was one who escaped his notice.

Monark Starstalker, known to Philo, had stowed away with every intention of bringing Zan's prisoner to the proper authorities himself because of the high price on his head. Using his Nano-swarm to disguise himself as Nova Centurion Fraktur, Starstalker ambushed Nova and Philo, proving to be more than a match for both of them. Even the added firepower of Morrow and Irani Rael couldn't turn the tide in their favor. To make matters worse, Starstalker's arrogance coupled with the immense damage done to Worldmind by his Nano-swarm allowed Ego to regain control of the Corps temporary base of Nu-Xandar as a group of Mindless Ones, following Philo through The Fault, attacked the starship, attempting to free their imprisoned leader. While the Nova Corps had their hands full dealing with each catastrophe, Starstalker decided not to help since there was no money in it. His mind was soon changed when the Mindless Ones cut the main power to the Resolute Duty, allowing their leader to escape captivity. The monster set his sights on Starstalker, who was guarding the cell along with Irani, and blasted a hole through Starstalker's torso. What happened next was a complete surprise to his companion.

Starstalker's body began to repair itself and Ulysses watched over it, preventing any outside aide, claiming the warranty on the Starstalker model would be null and void by the Technos Group. After the repairs were finished, Starstalker came online and Irani told him he was a Nanite Construct, which apparently was unknown to him. Realizing he knew less about himself than previously thought, Starstalker's free will suddenly outweighed his need for money. He helped Nova carry out his plan to rid them of both the Mindless Ones and Ego, and told Nova in this universe he was free, no longer subjected to the whims of others, and he was going to explore his new home and "live a little." I got impression that Monark Starstalker existed in the future.So Howard Chaykin because -guess he was.Obviously Marvel is trying pull one over us,as alway refitting their fictional reality to tell the story they want.Unlike I didn't Monark.I remember him,but I'm obsessing all current so beloved crap you buy and read.

Starstalker is in possession of microscopic sentient robotic creatures he calls his Nano-swarm. These ingenious creations give Starstalker a wide array of abilities, making him a formidable foe for one or numerous enemies.

Starstalker can extend a Nanocloud around his body to go into stealth mode, completely camouflaging him from prying eyes. It can make him seem invisible, or he can disguise himself in the appearance of another. The Nanocloud also makes it hard for an opponent to target and strike him, even with the use of visor-mounted optics. The Nano-swarm prevents anyone from sneaking up on Starstalker, and it makes fighting him similar to fighting a ghost.

Starstalker can use his Nano-swarm to travel back to the source of a scanning beam and compromise the operating system on the other end. The limit of how far his Nanoencoding can travel is undetermined at this time, but once inside a computer system, the amount of harm it can cause is catastrophic. The Nano-swarm can shut down both offensive and defensive capabilities in technological devices, and it can haze or confuse an individual's mind.

Starstalker can even use the Nano-swarm to damage a starship’s engines so badly it will cause them to explode.

Starstalker is actually a Nanite Construct, not a living being, and as such he has self-repair systems to mend damage done to his body even though it appears as if he has to temporarily shut down while doing so. Ulysses, his android companion, watches over him while in this state. It has yet to be determined what level of injury would prove too much for his systems to repair, but it is entirely possible, because he is not truly alive, Monark Starstalker is immortal.

Abilities Starstalker is an expert in armed and unarmed combat, and his Nano-swarm makes it nearly impossible for his enemies to get his precise location to strike him.

Weapons Starstalker's weapon of choice is the Vortex Gun. The pistol was developed for riot control, and it could disperse a crowd when fired because all within the radius of fire would experience instantaneous blindness and vertiginous nausea. Monark Starstalker is immune to the gun's capabilities.

Starstalker can use his Nano-swarm to construct a sword consisting of supra-sharp microbots capable of taking a head clean off in a single stroke. It is entirely possible the Nano-swarm can create various forms of edged weaponry or even weapons with moving parts.

Paraphernalia Starstalker has a companion in the form of a cybernetic falcon-drone, but Ulysses is much more than a robotic pet. Ulysses is an artificial nervous system, telepathically linked to its master, with an array of senses including audio, visual and thermal. Ulysses is extremely agile, lightning quick and it can erect force shields on command to protect Starstalker from injury.

Monark Starstalker is a fictional Marvel Comics character, created by Howard Chaykin and first featured in Marvel Premiere #32 (October 1976).

==Origin== Originally from an alternate future timeline (Earth-7643), Monark Starstalker was a rigger (a pilot whose nervous system is linked to the ship`s computer for better control) during a space war.until stupider Marvel creators desided to shoe horn the shit into the already way overcrowded  Marvel Universe.This was a cool issue; I have nothing to add to your comments, I just have to say how much I loved Marvel Premiere for gems like this (or Chaykin’s Monark Starstalker, or that 2-issue Man-wolf story, followed by the 2-issue introduction to the new Ant Man…).Although I can not back up this theory I'd almost lay money on the fact that Al Milgrom inked that cover in an attempt to make it look and feel as close to Jim Starlin as possible. As far as the interior art for the book Chaykin is credited for both the pencils and inks. If you notice the art samples from the book that Mike included in his story you can see a distnct difference which would imply somebody else had a hand in the art that went on the cover.Howard Chaykin was still trying to emulate Alex Toth,because his work is more art done by Toth Amon or other Conan villian.  And I must admit I like the interior art. And in regards to Chaykins work (once again as seen in the art samples mentioned) it has changed over the years. I prefer the art he was doing for the Dominic Fortune series that ran as a back up feature in Rapaging Hulk magazine. Right about the time Chaykin started doing American Flagg his art changed. I didn't care for it as much...but think it's a stylistic change that has to grow on you. I don't think his art has changed much since Flagg. His run on the 2006 Blade series as well as the Captain America/Civil War issue of New Avengers and the one installment of the Captain America Theatre of War book he worked on looks very much like his old Flagg stuff. There are slight changes in his inking and the overall method in how things get inked in modern comics (more by computer now than by pen or brush) that does give the finished work a darker look that you may be refering to. Over all I think Chaykin is an unsong hero in the realm of comic art but unfortunately does not attract the eye of the current comic buying customers.  Let's face it even if Kirby and Ditko was still doing a monthly book people wouldn't want to buy or aprreciate their work. As a matter of fact people didn't want to see Kirby and Ditko on books back in the 80's. They wanted Miller and Byrne. Nowadays nobody wants Byrne or Miller and even the legendary Jim Starlin would starve to death if he had to make a living drawing comics in a market dominated with artwork that often times looks like watered down saturday morning animation. By the way, I found the Slings & Arrows criticism quite amusing: “immature and scientifically inaccurate” can probably be used to describe pretty much all SF comics, and big chunk of SF in general Comments: Created by Howard Chaykin ==then ruined by Howie Chaykin Next we have Monark Starstalker, one of Howard Chaykin’s many anti-heroes. I actually really dig this book to a degree– Chaykin shows that he has his own vision and creates a very believable future. His layouts can get a little confusing and it’s a bit talky at times, but there’s a lot to like. Bounty hunters make excellent characters if you can get them unwillingly entangled in some righteous cause (see Han Solo). Chaykin was getting there with Monark Starstalker and it’s too bad this wasn’t given more than a single issue.Maybe if someone developed other the recent nano crap character -maybe it would work.The origin would some upgrades and the usual,we are redoing,but adding allot self indulgent creator crap,not intended in the original-like punky teenage girlsidekick,who is gum popping big boobed turd like BOOM BOOM or create the lets kill Jason Todd character again,so can kill again or Gremlin the Dragon from the Filmation Flash Gordon .After the first season was too good,so lets ruin the cheapo re-run season two with this unlikeable asshole.As the years pass by, I’m more and more impressed with Chaykin as auteure-than so big top borish ,over pompus sex obssessed pro he is now

Wednesday, August 1, 2012 Comic of the Day: Howard Chaykin's Marvel Premiere #32 (1976) Marvel Premiere #32 (Oct. 1976)I'll be heading down to the comics shop today to pick up Howard Chaykin's Black Kiss II #1, which I'm sure will be worth the effort. I've been on a bit of a Chaykin kick lately, so today I'll offer a quick look at an oldie I picked up on a recent trip: Marvel Premiere #32 (Oct. 1976), featuring Monark Starstalker! This is an early effort by Chaykin as both writer and artist, and it unfortunately shows. The good stuff is the artwork, which is sleek and well-designed. It's pretty unusual stuff for Marvel at the time, though the style seen here would become more familiar with both Chaykin's later work and Frank Miller's style on his original Daredevil run. The individual panels and pages are well-designed and look decidedly un-comic-book-y for the era. Chakyin goes heavy on the blacks and it looks most like Chaykin's work on Star Wars #1. (I believe Roy Thomas stated in an issue of Alter-Ego that I don't have handy to confirm that it was this issue that prompted the Lucasfilm folks to specifically request Chaykin draw the Star Wars comic.) .Ofcourse,Chaykin went about then telling people Han Solo was a Cody Starbuck rip-off.

I'm tentatively including this in my timeline only becauseI'm tentatively including this in my timeline only because Monark Starstalker recently appeared in an issue of Nova, although that character may not really be the same one that appears in this issue (see also: Star-Lord).

He's a deliberately unsympathetic character-which make another Howie Chaykin boring asshole.The Chaykin issues were great fun,at cirtain points

The connection with the bird is a little complicated. Apparently Monark had been injured on a previous mission and in order to fix him up, a group of robots built the bird to serve as an artificial nervous system linked telepathically to him. It's not quite clear to me what the implications of that are.Chaykin introduces concepts like he did with his previous Ironwulf series in DC Comics Weird Worlds,but neglects to bother to explain many topics introduced,because interfere with snappy diologue,getting jerk off in a cafettera and pushing the envelope.Pushing an envelope and getting jerk off in a cafe are two things important to Mister Chaykin.That and hoping his characters come off non virginal and not greedy,porn obssessed idiots-which they did often.The Triplanetary Metals and the economy of Starking might have the whole linchpin to a bigger Dune like story,but then Chaykin would not be obsessed with leed characters getting blow jobs and finding their Russian Jewish oringins.We might find out Monark Starstalker originally was not Monark Starstalker,but name Monark David Starstalkov,while Robin Goodfreind blows him. 

This isn't exactly a great story. I suppose some points are deserved for creating a straight-up mercenary character, and it's worth noting that this was published before Star Wars, both because of the Han Solo similarity and coincidentally similar cover art. But it's not a compelling plot, and i've never been a great fan of Chaykin's writting-his art drew to work-nothing else.

Monark gives the frightened federal representative his card and is then introduced to the sheriff.Thank god,it wasn't his credit card or the sheriff's off shopping.Why a sheriff and a Marshall like Matt Dillon-because duh,it's space western.

Why is the Starstalker on this Mega IV outpost by the name of New Canaan? To track down murderer Kurt Hammer. Why is it New Canaan-other than Chaykin is Jewish,we have no idea.Mega IV is the best spot for a colony,being Mega One thru three suck.Too hot.Gravity too heavy.Too rainy-you know the usual non terraformed shit you find in deep space.Just ask Star Trek.Four is their lucky planet number,too.

Naturally, Monark will have to hand in his weapon while he goes and gets himself a hot meal. This naturally leads to a bar fight and Monark making the acquaintance of the lovely Ms. Goodfriend.She's nothing more a typical female standie,put for some eyecandy and sex.

The two get friendly and Monark explains his origins:Yup-you meet a girlfreind and tell her your way too breif origin story.We all do that,don't we.Knowing thing about Nasa and moon landing and the girl says no,you tell I'm Neil Armstronge and walked on the freakin moon.Wow,but that happened in 1969 and your only 22.

seven years ago, a rigger fleeing from hostiles through the core of a nova.How the frack his whole star ship wasn't fried along him,is beyond me. His entire nervous system was fried and ships stupid unseen solar sail must have too-BECAUSE SEE NOTHING OF THEM IN THE FLASHBACK ART.. Picked up by a neutral ship, the 'technos' saved him by linking him to Ulysses, his android falcon.I hear the neural ships makes frequent visits for survivors of Nova explosions in deep space>Yup,Techno No#1-Everbody in that star systems dead,but lets see any asshole flew their rigger solar sail through the nova anyway.

While this looks great, it's a complete mess to read.Much as allot of Chaykins writting,it full of snappy dialogue,made booste the story and Chaykins thinking more adult,but appears like something a Telosian might create,who seen only movies and never talked to an actual human before. The story nominally involves a guy named Monark Starstalker,another Lord Ironwulf/Cody Starbuck/Dominic Fortune type out for money who's a kind of bounty hunter pursuing a target on a remote planet. It's a simple premise, but it gets bogged down in clunky exposition intended to inject a sense of reality into this world.

The character is a prototypical Chaykin hero: hard-boiled, tough and irresistible to the ladies.Problem is,if Howard Chaykin took care to develope character like Bob Kane,Denny O'Neil and others did with the Batman,instead of running around creatting more fucking idiot creations elsewhere,Monark Starstalker might be something worthe following. This book is also awfully murky looking — the heavy inks just didn't translate well into the printing processes used for comics at the time. It'd be nice to see this done on better paper that could present the images more sharply and vividly. The exact universe Monark Starstalker exists in may be left to interpretation. But he most likely exists in an alternate/potential future dimension, during a time when Earth has begun planetary expansion. This reality was named Earth-7643 in OHotMU Hardcover#3.

Editor's Note;Not according to the imformation below,that some contracts Chaykin's Marvel Premiere story years ago,that made it seem as Monark Starstalker came Earth-a future Earth and not todays timeline.Possibly there two different characters,who similar or Monark Starstalker travelled back in time somewhen. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning like many previous Marvel writers and so called Professionals like do a recon hack job to everyone elses creations.so as recreate the character to fit into the current Marvel Comic Universe and team with all other silly,updated ,seen there day creations.: Monark Starstalker returns! I remember reading his original appearance in Marvel Premiere #32 way back in 1976. To be honest, I had forgotten about him. It was fun seeing the robot falcon Ulysses in action again. Abnett and Lanning keep on mining the rich cosmic history of the Marvel universe.Is it mining or exploiting it ?Ofcourse all I hate Monark Starstalkers-he sucks,will buying when he's running around the X-Men,like Wolverine and getting spread to thin each most of sixteen books like Spider-Man once had,suddenly he'll so cool.Brainwashed Wizard readers will tell Wolverine was so cool always,but actually he was a jerk at first in the Hulk and didn't good until the X-Men.So Monark Starstalkers jumping around saying I'm the just at what I do and acting grumpy because nobody understands him and Captain America's calling a phycho-before and after six or seven deaths and resurrections,after fighting Tranformer Iron Man,you heard it here first. The story ends in classic Western fashion, is all I'll tell you. All in all, new good writing from Chaykin but art that fits the story well (if a little dark at times). In fact, it's just splendid art. Definitely a style that I wished Chaykin had stuck with this more and shoved crap Black Kiss up his ass-overated crap that it is.

History

Monark Starstalker Working as a "rigger",as told in the issues flashback, with his nervous system wired into the ship he was piloting, Monark was attacked by hostiles. Running from them, Monark Starstalker was forced to traverse the core of a nova, the star's energies buffeting the ship and frying his nervous system, senses, and memory. Rescued by a passing ship, the doctors gave Monark Starstalker Monark Starstalkerup for dead, but the "technos" developed an android falcon, named Ulysses, which, telepathically linked to him, acted as an artificial nervous system. Becoming a "vigilante" (seemingly a bounty hunter), Monark Starstalker pursued wanted men across the galaxy.

Some time later,in an issue of Comics Journal #109.1986, cover date July: Portions of Marvel Premiere #32, along with numerous other examples of his work, appear in an Gary Groth interview with Chaykin refered Monark Starstalker ,an in editorial captions not directly from Chaykin, as "an abortive Marvel strip," but the reasons for its demise are not given. Even with illustrations, it's a thirty-three page interview.

But then Chaykin was beyond from the American Flagg and graphic novel Hard Times, his Blackhawk miniseries, maybe even Midnight Men were already published.

Publishing history

Marvel Premiere is an American comic book anthology series published by Marvel Comics. It ran for 61 issues from April 1972 to August 1981.

The series was originally intended to be a testing ground for new characters and the re-introduction of characters who no longer had their own titles.Template:Fact To some extent it was successful in this endeavor by featuring Doctor Strange beginning with issue #3 and Iron Fist in issue #15, written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Gil Kane. Other, less successul, introductions include the Legion of Monsters, Paladin and Woodgod. The comic also featured the first appearance of the second Ant-Man (Scott Lang) and the first comic book appearance of rock musician Alice Cooper. Another feature that would spinoff into its own title was Seeker 3000, but with this difference that this only happened twenty years after its first appearance in Marvel Premiere #41 (1978), with a four issue miniseries published in 1998 .

Later on in the title's run Marvel Premiere was also used to finish stories of characters who had lost their own book or feature. One example of this was the Man-Wolf two-parter in #45-46, which continued the story from Creatures on the Loose #37. Another was the three issue Black Panther series.

Plot synopsis

Monark Starstalker first known activity came on the planet Stormking, a perpetual icy world. There, the bounty hunter intended to hunt down and capture Kurt Hammer. After befriending local sheriff Bob Hightower and visiting Triplanet Metals Inc. vice president Emanuel Shaw, Monark Starstalker met Robin Goodfriend. While visiting with her at her home, Shaw and Hightower were killed by Kurt Hammer, who escaped with his girlfriend, Brigid Siebold in front of the town of New Canaan's populace. When the populace informed Starstalker of where Hammer had gone, Starstalker tracked the man down, utilizing Ulysses to enable Monark Starstalker to hit a seemingly-hidden Kurt Hammer. Firing at Ulysses, Hammer inadvertently triggered and avalanche, burying Starstalker. Thinking him dead, Kurt Hammer then began trying to kill Ulysses, not noticing Starstalker digging himself out until it was too late. While Starstalker intended to keep Hammer alive to carry his girlfriend back to town, Hammer died on the long trek back to town. Informing the citizens of this, Starstalker asked them to make sure his claim for the kill was registered and tell Goofriend he was leaving. Starstalker then made his way out of town, not wanting to deal with the townspeople (who had cheered the death of Shaw, yet were shocked when Hightower was killed) any more.

Utilizes an android falcon, Ulysses, which acts as an external nervous system and extra sensory organs,for Monark Starstalker allowing him to see, hear, and detect thermal readings through Ulysses.

• Weapons

• Utilizes handguns.Vortex Pistol is a peace keeping weapon developed during the Famine Riots of '03?? for crowd dispersal. The weapon causes instantaneous blindness, vertigo, and nausea.Similar to Slumbatol Pistol,used in American Flagg

Technos Little has been revealed about this alien race, except that their hearts are mechanical. The Technos also created Ulysses, Monark Starstalker's android falcon.

Triplanet Metals Inc.

Triplanet was a federal mining corporation, which also catered to the needs of terraformers. They were interested in the vast mineral wealth beneath the glaciers of planet Stormking.

Stormking was an inhospitable planet of rock and ice, and the most distant of all the frontier worlds. It's inhabitants survived in cities protected by force domes. Places of interest included New Canaan, Vesalius, and a Mega IV out post

Wharf Rats

Slang for common thugs who prey on off-worlders.

Characters

Robin Goodfriend-Robin was a frontierswoman born on planet Stormking. However as the daughter of a federal citizen, she was treated as an outcast in the frontier. She was a known cohort of Monark Starstalker, and knew Ulysses was the source of his power. She lived in a chalet on the outskirts of New Canaan.

Kurt Hammer-Kurt Hammer was a decorated war hero among the frontier planets. After the war he became an intergalactic assassin, who was wanted dead or alive for the murder of six people on the planet Tycho. It was also rumored that he was secretly involved with Triplanet Metals Inc. He was last seen in New Canaan where he murdered Bob Hightower, Emanuel Shaw, and a number of civilians. He was later found dead due to pneumonia, the location of his corpse was reported to authorities by Monark Starstalker.

Bob Hightower Hightower was a frontier sheriff of New Canaan, he was respected and well liked. He was murdered in public by Kurt Hammer.

Emanuel Shaw-Mr. Shaw was 3rd Vice President of Triplanet Metals Inc., and a federal citizen. He was murdered by Kurt Hammer while giving a public speech about methods of terraforming Stormking. --

Brigid Siebold-Miss Siebold was Emanuel Shaw's aide, and a federal citizen. She was kidnapped by Kurt Hammer; however, she was actually Kurt Hammer's secret lover. She was later rescued by Monark Starstalker, but in need of immediate medical attention.

Notes

The squinty fellow is Monark Starstalker, seen here on the cover of "Marvel Premiere" #32, October 1976. Created by Howard Chaykin, Monark is a charming, square-jawed, two-fisted rogue with thick black hair and crinkly, smiley eyes. It's a shame Chaykin never revisted that type of character ever again, huh? His android falcon, besides just looking hella cool, also doubles as a telepathic replacement for his body's destroyed nervous system. So, the coolness is essentially doubled.Monark Starstalker,like Lord Ironwolf and Cody Starbuck,had alot of potention,but for whatever reason-poor storytelling,poor or misrerected characterization,these three characters failed.Given a fresh,less post American Flagg Howard Chaykin they might fly-might flght maybe.Monark Starstalker made an appearence on the cover of NOVA #29.
